SKM Panel Likely To Meet Amit Shah, Narendra Tomar Today Before Deciding Fate Of Protest

Mumbai: The five-member committee of the Samyukta Kisan Morcha (SKM), which is spearheading the farmers’ agitation against the three agriculture laws, is likely to discuss their pending agriculture-related issues with Union ministers Amit Shah and Narendra Singh Tomar.

The meeting with the two ministers is likely to take place a few hours before the scheduled meeting of the SKM.

The SKM members will hold an important meeting at the Singhu border this afternoon to decide on the future course of action and the movement, which began after the government enacted three agriculture laws last year.

“The five-member panel of SKM is scheduled to meet Union Agriculture Minister Narendra Singh Tomar to discuss farmers’ issues and pending demands. He is also likely to meet Union Home Minister Amit Shah. A decision is likely to be taken later after the 2 pm meeting of the SKM,” a senior farmer leader told PTI on condition of anonymity.

A five-member panel of SKM, an umbrella body of 40 farm unions, also held an internal meeting this morning to deliberate on the Centre’s offer to withdraw the year-long protest.

The SKM had on Saturday constituted a panel to discuss with the government the pending demands of the protesting farmers, including a legal guarantee on MSP for crops, compensation to the kin of the farmers who died during the agitation against three agriculture laws and the withdrawal of cases against the protesters.

The committee consists of farmer leaders Balbir Singh Rajewal, Ashok Dhawle, Shiv Kumar Kakka, Gurnam Singh Chaduni and Yudhvir Singh.

Thousands of farmers from Punjab, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh have been protesting at the borders of the national capital since November 26 last year to demand repeal of the three farm laws.
