Mumbai: Taking a dig on Congress interim president Sonia Gandhi and senior leader Rahul Gandhi over their stand on freedom fighter Vinayak Damodar Savarkar, actor Vikram Gokhale said that Congress leaders who are not aware of Savarkar should not make any comment.
Hitting out at Sonia Gandhi, he said, “I don’t care about her. What does she know about Savarkar? What has she read about Savarkar? She has no right to make any comment about him …” ANI quoted him saying.
Gokhale also said, ” What Rahul Gandhi knows about Savarkar?”
Expressing his views about Veer Savarkar, Gokhale said, “I am a Savarkar devotee, and an ardent admirer of his poems and those who do not know what Savarkar is, he has no right to comment. ”
He went on to say, “Savarkar was not a god, he was a human being. Why do you consider Savarkar, Gandhi as God? Why? He was also a human being, he can also make mistakes.”
Elaborating on Savarkar’s Hindutva policy, he said, “Why don’t Brahmins want a reservation for every caste? We don’t want whatever we can get on the basis of a little knowledge, even if we live Begging for, but we do not want a reservation.
This comes against the backdrop of Savarkar’s grandson Ranjit Savarkar on the distribution of a booklet titled ‘Veer Savarkar Keen Veer’? During the 10-day camp of the Congress Seva Dal. The booklet made a reference to the book, page 423 ‘Freedom at Midnight’, written by Larry Collins and Dominique Lapierre, stating that Godse had a homosexual relationship with his “political guru” Savarkar prior to prior celibacy.
