Sought 12 Seats For SP As Part Of MVA For Maha Polls: Akhilesh

Mumbai: The Samajwadi Party (SP), led by party chief Akhilesh Singh Yadav, has requested 12 seats to contest as part of the opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) alliance in Maharashtra. This comes as the MVA constituents, including Shiv Sena (UBT), Congress, and NCP (Sharad Pawar), are still in the process of finalizing their seat-sharing arrangement ahead of the Maharashtra Assembly elections. Speaking to reporters in Dhule on Saturday, Yadav said that while his party is content with fewer seats, the SP has shared details of constituencies where it has a strong presence. “We have asked for 12 seats as part of the MVA. The Samajwadi Party has always been satisfied with a few seats,” Yadav stated. Also Read: BJP Finalizes Seat-sharing In Jharkhand, To Contest On 68 Seats

As part of its preparations for the upcoming elections, the SP has already declared candidates for five constituencies. Irshad Jahagirdar has been named the party’s candidate for Dhule City, making him the fifth declared candidate. The other candidates announced include sitting MLA Rais Shaikh from Bhiwandi East, Riyaz Azmi from Bhiwandi West, and Shaan-E-Hind from Malegaon Central. The SP’s state president, Abu Asim Azmi, a sitting MLA, will be contesting again from the Shivajinagar-Mankhurd seat. Azmi emphasized the party’s strength in these areas, explaining that the declaration of candidates is aimed at reinforcing SP’s importance within the alliance. “We have shown that we are asking for seats where we are strong,” Azmi said, adding that Congress has not won the Bhiwandi East seat since 1999, and that the SP is confident in its chances.

The MVA’s seat-sharing discussions have been ongoing, with no formal agreement reached yet. Azmi expressed confidence that the MVA leadership will consider the SP’s strength and work with them to finalize the arrangement. He also warned that the MVA should not overlook the SP’s strongholds, cautioning that the alliance should not regret sidelining SP candidates as in past elections in Haryana.

The Samajwadi Party, a key member of the INDIA bloc at the national level, is aiming to play a significant role in the Maharashtra elections. Along with the Peasants and Workers Party (PWP) and the Left parties, the SP is a constituent of the MVA, which is striving to unseat the ruling coalition in the state.

The Maharashtra Assembly elections will be held in a single phase on November 20, with counting of votes scheduled for November 23. The elections will be critical for the MVA, as it aims to reclaim power in the state. The Samajwadi Party’s demand for 12 seats highlights the complex negotiations underway within the opposition alliance as it seeks to present a united front against the ruling BJP-led coalition.
