Sri Lanka Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa Steps Down

Mumbai : In another shocking move Sri Lanka Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa will resign from his post on Saturday, news agency AFP quoted his son Namal Rajapaksa as saying on Friday.

Namal said he will quit “to ensure stability of the nation”, after the Supreme Court ordered that he should not exercise the powers of the office he has claimed since October 26.

The Supreme Court announced this immediately after the ban was imposed on 73-year-old Rajapakse and his old government had asked to use the power of the office since October.

Namal Rajapakse said they will join a coalition with President Maithripala Sirisena who triggered the political crisis on October 26 by sacking Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe and replacing him with former foe Rajapakse.

A day back, the Supreme Court had opened the path of Presidential Matrimonials for possible proceedings against Sirisena’s decision that they broke the law after dissolving Parliament last month.

Meanwhile the bench headed by seven judge has agreed that Sirisena violated the constitution when he dissolved parliament last month to prevent Rajapakse suffering a humiliating defeat on the floor of the House.

The court’s decision also meant that the country was effectively without the government and for the budget for 2019, the parliament was leading the closure in the absence of voting.

In another setback for Sirisena, the Supreme Court ruled on Thursday that the sacking of Parliament was illegal on 9th November and it canceled a snap election on 5th January.

Rajapakse was defeated twice a time in no- confidence motions as he failed to prove his majority in parliament but refused to take action.

According to Political sources Sirisena had the possibility of inviting Vikramsinghe to create a new government and terminate the power vacuum in the weekend.
