SSR Death Case: Probe Underway Against Social Media Users For Targeting Mumbai Police

Mumbai: Mumbai Police has filed two separate cases under the Information Technology (IT) Act against several social media users for targeting the police force including Mumbai Police Commissioner Param Bir Singh and for using the morphed image of the senior police officer on Twitter.

The fake accounts are expected to come under scrutiny after the FIR. Posts from these accounts were uploaded on social media platforms of various countries including Italy, Japan, Poland, Slovenia, Indonesia, Turkey, Thailand, Romania, and France.

“Many social media account holders are trolling Mumbai Police Commissioner Sir on various platforms like Twitter, Instagram and Facebook and using abusive language against him and the force. So against those account holders under 67 Account and Technology Act, An FIR has been registered,” said Rashmi Karandikar, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP), Cyber Cell, Mumbai Police.

Karandikar said, “Recently a second FIR has been lodged against the convict who used the morphed image of the official Twitter account of Mumbai Police Commissioner Sir.”

According to the police, most of these accounts are fake and are continuously targeting the Mumbai Police for its role in the investigation of Sushant Singh Rajput’s death in Mumbai and other recent incidents.

The police investigation is going on in both cases.
