Strain In Kerala Health Infra, Low Contact Tracing Of COVID Cases: Central team

Mumbai: The Central team which went to Kerala, in its report to the Union Health Ministry said there is a strain on the health infrastructure in the state especially the ICU and ventilator beds, TimesNow reported.

The team has also suggested enhanced testing, contact tracing and containment measures, stating that the contact tracing of the positive cases is “abysmally low” in the state.

The average daily testing which stands at 8,313 is showing a decreasing trend as compared to the ratio of tests done in the previous months of April and May.

According to Times Now, this team was divided into two, the first team visited Allapura, Kollam, Pathanamthitta and Trivandrum.

As per Times Now sources, the district of Allapura had an 11.9 per cent positivity rate, the bed occupancy in this district was quite high

In Kollam, the positivity rate was 10.51 per cent and about 80 per cent of the oxygen beds were occupied.

The team said in its report that above 85 positive cases are in home isolation.

It was told that the acceptance of facility-based isolation among the common people in Kerala is very less.

The team said in the report, “This activity has contributed to the transmission of infection within families and has resulted in high TPR…. This was observed during visits to regional areas. Most members of large joint families were found positive.”

The team has observed that there is no active surveillance or notified containment zones with perimeter control.

“Guidelines on isolation and quarantine are not followed. There is limited monitoring of parameters prescribed for identification of early warning signs,” the team said in the report.

“There is pressure on the health infrastructure especially the ICU and ventilator beds,” it added.

India reported a high jump in daily COVID cases and reported 42,625 new cases across the country in 24 hours, Kerala reported 23,676 new cases.
