Student Body Elections Conducted In Free, Fair Manner: JNU Poll Committee

Mumbai: The Jawaharlal Nehru University Students’ Union (JNUSU) Election Committee (EC) said on Thursday that it conducted the student body elections “in a free and fair manner” as per the recommendations of the Lyngdoh Committee.

The Election Commission’s clarification came after Dean of Students Umesh Kadam, who alleged in a letter to the student-run body on September 9 that he violated the Lyngdoh Committee recommendations (LCR) and sought clarification.

The Election Commission submitted its reply to Kadam, who is also the chairman of the Grievance Redressal Cell (GRC).

The statement said, “We, the members of the Election Committee conducted the JNUSU election 2019-20 in an independent and impartial manner.

Kadam’s letter sought a response from all the election body members on 10 allegations. The Election Commission said that all the members asked to prove their innocence with the documents.

Letters were sent after the office hours with guards arriving late inside the hostel to receive the summons.

The Election Commission claimed that the letter was sent in violation of clause 6.8.4 of the LCR which prohibits GRC members from filing complaints.

“He stated that GRC has also violated Clause No. 6.8.5 of the LCR stating that the parties are not notified until they receive a copy of the complaint; 6.8.7 of the LCR in which “The hearing should not be held after 24 hours; receipt of the notice.”

The Left-backed All India Students’ Association protested at the Varsity campus against alleged “GRC interference and threats from JNU EC”.

However, the Delhi High Court has barred the variance from notifying the results till 17 September. A court order by two students alleging that their nominations for election to the councillor at JNUSU were illegally rejected.
