Student Sexually Assaulted On Chennai’s Anna University Campus

Mumbai: A 19-year-old student of Anna University was sexually assaulted, and her male friend attacked by two unidentified men on the university campus in Chennai on the evening of December 23. The incident came to light after the survivor filed a police complaint on December 26.

Progress in the Case
Police have arrested Gnanasekharan (37), a street-side biryani seller, from Kotturpuram in connection with the case. Gnanasekharan has confessed to the crime, and authorities are investigating his potential involvement in other incidents. According to police, the accused filmed the assault and used the video to blackmail the victims. Efforts are underway to apprehend the second suspect, with special teams formed to expedite the investigation.

Security Review and Protests
In response to the incident, Greater Chennai Police and university security officials will conduct a joint review to enhance campus safety measures. On December 27, members of the Students’ Federation of India (SFI) and the All India Women’s Welfare Federation staged protests outside the campus, demanding swift action and justice for the victims.

The university registrar, J Prakash, issued a statement affirming full cooperation with the police investigation.

Political Reactions
Tamil Nadu BJP President K. Annamalai criticized the DMK government, alleging a decline in law and order. He claimed that malfunctioning CCTVs near the crime scene contributed to the incident and demanded accountability from Chief Minister MK Stalin.

“Women don’t feel safe in Tamil Nadu anymore,” Annamalai tweeted, accusing the government of prioritizing political suppression over public safety. He called for an official statement from the Chief Minister on the case and urged swift justice.

Authorities have pledged to bring the perpetrators to justice and address the security gaps on campus. The investigation continues, with public and political pressure mounting for prompt and decisive action.
