Supreme Court Declines Urgent Hearing On Plea Seeking Lifting Of Ongoing Curfew In J-K

Mumbai: Supreme Court refused urgent hearing on the petition which seeks withdrawal of curfew, blocking of phone lines, internet, news channels & other restrictions from Jammu and Kashmir.

The petition, filed by Tehseen Poonawalla, also sought immediate release of political leaders from ‘illegal custody’.

The top court bench headed by Justice NV Ramana said that the matter would be placed before Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi for listing.

Section 144 of the Criminal Procedure Code (CRPC) was enacted in Jammu and Kashmir before resolving to repeal the clause of Article 370, repealing the special status of the state.

In the wake of the move to scrap Article 370, the PDP president Mehbooba Mufti and National Conference deputy chief Omar Abdullah were taken into preventive arrest in Srinagar.

Phone lines, internet services were also blocked and a large number of troops were deployed in Jammu and Kashmir citing security reasons.

Yesterday, National Security Advisor (NSA) Ajit Doval visited the Valley to review the security situation and address the apprehensions of residents after repealing the provisions under Article 370 granting special status to Jammu and Kashmir.

He interacted with the local people in Shopian to assure them that the measures are temporary and they will be given rest once they find a new leader in the area.
