Supreme Court Grants Bail To BJP Activist Over Mamata Banerjee Meme

Mumbai: Bail granted by the supreme court to BJP activist for allegedly posting a morphed image of Mamata Banerjee on social media and asked her to apologise, seeing that the freedom of speech is over when it comes to the rights of others violates.

A vacation bench of Justice Indira Banerjee and Sanjeev Khanna said that Priyanka Sharma, BJP Youth Morcha, will apologize in writing to the Chief Minister of West Bengal if she is released from jail for posting a photograph.

On 10 May, the West Bengal Police arrested Sharma under the IPC Section 500 (defamation) and other provisions of the Information Technology Act on the complaint of a local Trinamool Congress leader Vishu Hazra.

During the hearing, the bench said that although the freedom of speech is non-negotiable “Your freedom of speech ends when it violates the rights of others”.

The bench said that since Sharma is a member of a political party, so the urge to post such a picture will be different from those shared by the common people.

Sharma allegedly shared a photo on Facebook, in which Banerjee’s face was a photo taken by actor Priyanka Chopra from the Met Gala event in New York.
