Supreme Court Refuses To Ban Maratha Reservation In State Government Jobs And Colleges

Mumbai: The Supreme Court on Friday refused to ban the Maratha reservation in state government jobs and colleges and is expected to hear the appeal of quota cancellation soon.

The court also issued a notice to the Maharashtra government on the appeal filed in the Maratha Reservation case.
The apex court said that the decision of the Maharashtra State Government to give reservations to the Marathas and to uphold the Bombay High Court’s decision cannot be implemented with retrospective effect.

Reservation has been provided to the community under the social and educationally backward category (SEBC) category.

The petitioner had claimed that the SEBC Act was determined under the pressure of political pressure and for the equality and complete disregard of constitutional principles of law for the Marathas.

According to the petitioner, the High Court has ignored the fact that the Marathas have captured 40 per cent of the government jobs available in the open category.
