Supreme Court Rejects Anticipatory Bail, To Congress Leaders P Chidambaram

Mumbai: Trouble for former finance minister and senior Congress leader P Chidambaram, as Supreme Court on Wednesday refused to grant immediate relief from arrest.

The Supreme Court bench refused to list the matter for an immediate hearing and placed the case before Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi.

Solicitor General Tushar Mehta told the apex court that it was a case of monumental money laundering. To this, Chidambaram’s lawyer and senior advocate Kapil Sibal said that a notice was pasted at the former minister’s residence at 2 pm.

The bench said: “I am sending the file to the Chief Justice for an immediate hearing.”

With this development, the former finance minister could be arrested by the CBI which is investigating a money laundering case against him.

The CBI is investigating P Chidambaram in the INX Media case, alleging irregularity in the FIPB clearance granted to the media group to receive foreign funds worth Rs 305 crore in 2007 during his tenure as finance minister, 2017.

Soon after the Delhi High Court dismissed his anticipatory bail plea, P Chidambaram went ‘missing’ and is still undetected. Earlier on Tuesday, a six-member CBI and an Enforcement Directorate team of officers arrived one after the other at Chidambar’s Jor Bagh residence, but could not meet him as he was not at home
