Supreme Court To Hear 140 Plea Challenging Citizenship (Amendment) Act

Mumbai: The Supreme Court will hear more than 140 pleas that challenge the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA). In most petitions, the apex court will be urged to examine the constitutional validity of the Act.

On 18 December, a bench headed by Chief Justice of India (CJI) SA Bobde issued notice to the central government seeking its response to various arguments filed by various organizations including Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) and Congress leader Jairam Ramesh.

The apex court on January 9 refused an immediate hearing on the petition declaring the CAA constitutional. Mass protests have shaken the nation as students and interest groups have demanded the removal of the CAA. Opposition parties, including Congress, TMC, Left parties and others, have called the Act on the government unconstitutional and divisive.
