Supreme Court To Hear Petition Against Citizenship Amendment Act
Mumbai: Following the ongoing protests all over the country over,Citizenship Amendment Act, the Apex Court will be hearing a batch of petitions challenging the constitutional validity of the amended law.
A three-judge bench headed by Chief Justice SA Bobde and Justices BR Gavai and Suryakant will hear the petitions, which include Congress pleas and Kishore Kishore Deb Parman, former Maharaja of Tripura.
Senior advocate Abhishek Manu Singhvi had mentioned both the arguments for immediate listing and said that a similar petition filed by the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) should also be heard on this petition.
Several parts of the Northeast, including Assam and Meghalaya, and other states, have been boiling in West Bengal for the past few days and violent protests are taking place.
The amended act has favored the opposition which is attacking the BJP-led government for violent protests across the country.
The Citizenship (Amendment) Act, 2019, which has paved the way for granting Indian citizenship to non-Muslim refugees from Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Bangladesh, has sparked widespread outrage across the country with violent protests in several states.
The amended law, which came into force after the assent of President Ram Nath Kovind on the night of 12 December, has drawn sharp criticism from some, calling it a “religiously-biased” act.
