This ban was overturned by a bench headed by the then CJI Deepak Mishra, thus allowing women of all age groups to enter the temple

Mumbai: The Supreme Court will on Monday block petitions related to the entry of women into temples, such as temples (Sabarimala temples in Kerala), mosques, Parsi temples, etc

Last November, a five-judge bench of the apex court sent all review petitions against the September 2018 verdict by a majority in the 3-2 judgment, including then-CJI Ranjan Gogoi and Justice Bobde. Allowing women in the age group of 10-50 to enter a large seven-judge bench in Sabarimala.

However, upon becoming the CJI, Justice Bobde constituted a large nine-judge constitution bench to hear the case along with the host of related matters. The bench consists of Justice R Banumathi, Ashok Bhushan, L Nageswara Rao, MM Shantanagoudar, S Abdul Nazir, R Subhash Reddy, BR Gavai and Suryakant besides the CJI itself.

The Sabarimala controversy dates back many years when female menstruating menstruation, i.e. in the age group of 10-50, was banned from entering the temple to honour the divine nature of Lord Ayyappa, in whose honour the temple stands. In 1991, the Kerala High Court legalized the ban on the entry of women into the shrine.

This ban was overturned by a bench headed by the then CJI Deepak Mishra, thus allowing women of all age groups to enter the temple.
