Taliban Fire Afghanistan Cricket Board Executive Director Hamid Shinwari

Kabul: The Taliban have sacked Hamid Shinwari, the executive director of Afghanistan’s cricket board.

Hamid Shinwari posted on his official Facebook page on Monday that he had been fired by Anas Haqqani, the younger brother of the new Taliban Interior Minister Sirajuddin Haqqani.

He said no reason was given for his sacking but said Naseebullah Haqqani would be appointed in his place.

The official Facebook page of the Afghanistan Cricket Board also announced Naseebullah Haqqani as the new executive director.

It is unclear if the new head of the Afghanistan Cricket Board is a relative of Sirajuddin Haqqani, whom the FBI has sought in connection with several high-profile attacks on Kabul with US-backed governments during the Taliban’s 20-year war.

The Taliban’s order to ban women’s sports, including cricket, has sparked international backlash. The Australian Cricket Board last week cancelled a match with the Afghanistan cricket team in protest against the ban on the women’s game in Afghanistan.
