This Is An Political Move, Sheila Dikshit on Delhi Govt’s Proposal to Make Metro, Bus Rides Free For Women

Mumbai: Former Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit abolished the Delhi government’s proposal to make Metro and DTC bus rides a ‘political step’ for women.

“It would be nice if they could do this. But this is being done for their own benefit, not for anyone else, it should be seen politically, “she said while talking to the media on Wednesday.

Earlier on Monday, CM Arvind Kejriwal announced free travel for women in public transport in the 2020 assembly elections – including Delhi Metro, cluster buses and DTC buses. The proposed plan is set to go to the floor in six months.

The National Convenor of Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) said that the Delhi government would be spending the expenditure on this move. In particular, the total expenditure of this proposed project to the public exchequer has been temporarily estimated to be around Rs. 1200 crores.

While addressing media Kejriwal assured that this is a step in public transport and making the city safer for women.

“I have been given a week’s time to make a detailed proposal for both DTC and Metro – how and when it can be implemented.” We are trying to start it within 2-3 months. We are also seeking suggestions from people regarding implementation, “he said.

“No subsidy will be imposed on anyone. There are many women who can afford these means of transportation. Those who can buy tickets do not have to take subsidy. We encourage those who can buy tickets and get subsidies so that others can benefit.”
