Those Who Haven’t Named Me Can’t Ask Me To Change My Name: Nusrat Jahan

Mumbai: Responding to a Muslim cleric who criticised her for attending Durga Puja festivities and said that she should change her name and religion, TMC MP Nusrat Jahan “Those who have not given me my name…do not have any right to ask me to change it.”

Nusrat Jahan married Kolkata businessman Nikhil Jain in June this year.

The first-time MP from Bashirhat here on Monday said that the cleric had no right to ask her to change her name.

Talking to reporters after offering the puja, Jahan said that he prayed to Goddess Durga to promote religious harmony, “I think I have my own way of harmonizing all religions. Born and raised in Bengal, I feel that I am doing right by following culture and tradition. Here, we all celebrate religious celebrations, ”she said when asked about her choice to worship despite being a Muslim.

Earlier a Muslim cleric had slammed Jahan for praying goddess Durga, he also urged that she should change her name.

“Islam does not allow its followers to pray before any other God other than Almighty Allah. Nusrat Jahan has performed the puja which is completely anti-Islam. She is not practicing Islam. She also married a non-Muslim. Since she does not believe in Islam, she should change her name. Why is she insulting Islam? “Ittihad Ulema-e-Hind vice president Mufti Asad Kasami told ANI here.

The cleric further said, “The Islam does not need any person who bears an Islamic name but actually defames the Islam.”
