Time For Close Consultations, Greater Cooperation On Afghanistan: Ajit Doval At 8-Nation NSA Meet

Being invited to the meet, China and Pakistan, communicated to India that they would not attend it

Mumbai: In an NSA-level meeting to review the prevailing security situation in Afghanistan, National Security Advisor Ajit Doval on Wednesday said that India and other countries are keeping a close watch on developments in the country.

Speaking at the eight-nation ‘Delhi Regional Security Dialogue on Afghanistan’, Doval said developments in Afghanistan have important implications not only for the people of that country but also for its neighbours and region.

“This is a time for close consultations, greater cooperation and coordination amongst us on Afghanistan,” the NSA said.

The NSA said that he was confident that the deliberations will contribute to helping the Afghan people and enhance their collective security.

India is hosting the security dialogue with top security officials from seven countries, including Iran, Russia and all five Central Asian nations – Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan.

Kazakhstan 

Chairman of Kazakhstan National Security Committee, Karim Massimov pointed that they need to increase humanitarian assistance for Afghanistan, adding that the social and economic situation of people of Afghan is deteriorating.

“We are concerned about the prevailing situation in Afghanistan. The social and economic situation of Afghans is deteriorating and the country is facing a humanitarian crisis. It is necessary to increase humanitarian assistance,” he said.

Tajikistan 

Nasrullo Rahmatjon Mahmudzoda, Secretary of Security Council of Tajikistan raised concern that the risk of trafficking and terrorism increases and they are ready to participate in all programs that can help the people of Afghanistan.

“As we have a long border with Afghanistan, the current situation creates extra risk and possibilities for drug trafficking, terrorism. The situation on Tajik-Afghan borders remains complicated,” he added.

Iran

Secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, Rear Admiral Ali Shamkhani said that the crisis of immigration and refugee is serious and hoped that they can come up with a resolution.

He said, “There is a crisis of migration, refugees in Afghanistan and solution can come with the formation of an inclusive government, and participation of all ethnic groups. Hoping to come up with a mechanism to resolve it.”

Kyrgyzstan 

Marat M Imankulov, Secretary of Security Council of Kyrgyzstan said that with joint efforts, help should be extended to Afghan people.

“It’s a very difficult situation in our region and all over the world; this is regarding terrorist organisations in Afghanistan,” he added.

Turkmenistan 

Charymyrat Amanov, Secretary of Security Council of Turkmenistan the meeting gave his country the opportunity to find out the solution to the prevailing situation in Afghanistan, and to establish peace in this region.

Russia

Secretary of the Security Council of Russia, Nikolai Patrushev said that such multilateral meetings help in countering challenges emanating from Afghanistan, and establishing long-lasting peace.

“The multilateral meetings help in discussing issues linked to development situation in Afghanistan; counter challenges, threat emanating from the country, and establish long-lasting peace in the country,” he said.

Being invited to the meet, China and Pakistan, communicated to India that they would not attend it.

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said India has traditionally enjoyed close and friendly ties with the people of Afghanistan and has called for a unified international response to address the security and humanitarian challenges facing Afghanistan.

The meeting is also called to deliberate upon measures to address the relevant security challenges and support the people of Afghanistan in promoting peace, security and stability.

Later in the day, the security officials of these countries are also scheduled to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
