TMC MLA Laxmi Ratan Shukla Resigns As West Bengal Minister

Mumbai: Former Indian cricketer Laxmi Ratan Shukla on Tuesday resigned as Minister of State for Sports in West Bengal and District President of Trinamool Congress in Howrah. However, Shukla remained TMC MLA. He has also resigned as the Howrah district president of the party. However, Shukla continues to remain a TMC MLA.

Sources said that the state secretariat said that Shukla’s resignation from the cabinet has been accepted.

Reacting to her resignation, Bengal CM Mamta Banerjee said, “Anyone can resign. He (Lakshmi Ratan Shukla) has written in his resignation letter that he wants to give more time to the sports and will continue as an MLA. Don’t take it in a negative way.”

According to the news, Shukla kept herself away from various party activities for the last few months. According to an Outlook report, Shukla, a senior TMC leader in Howrah district, had a difficult time meeting with Arup Roy, another senior TMC leader in the district and a senior TMC leader.

The former cricketer joined politics in 2016 and was elected from Howrah North. His resignation as a minister has also led to speculation that this could be his first step towards joining the TMC’s rival, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
