Tripura Civic Polls: Supreme Court Orders Deployment Of CAPF To Ensure Safe Polls

The directions come after several incidents of violence was reported in the state, in run-up Municipal elections

Mumbai: Ahead of the Tripura Civic body elections, the Supreme court on Thursday has directed MHA to provide two additional companies of Central Armed Police Forces to ensure free and fair civic polls in Tripura.

This comes after several incidents of violence was reported in the state, in the run-up of Agartala Municipal Corporation (AMC) and 12 other municipal bodies slated for November 25.

The apex court has asked the Centre as well as the Tripura government to ensure necessary arrangements to keep all the polls booth safe.

The CAPF will remain deployed till the counting of votes on November 28, the court added.

Meanwhile, the Trinamool Congress and the CPI have alleged that BJP workers are bullying their candidates, as well as not allowing all voters to enter polling booths. Gangs with masked faces are going door to door warning voters to stay home, the parties have alleged.

However, the BJP-led Tripura government has denied any involvement in the attacks.

In an order on a Trinamool appeal last week, the court told the Tripura government to ensure the opposition was allowed to operate in the political space.

Trinamool MP Sushmita Dev went back to the court, accusing the Tripura government of contempt of court for violating its order and requesting that the election should be deferred.
