Uttar Pradesh Prohibition Of Unlawful Religious Conversion Bill, 2021 Passed By Legislative Assembly By Voice Vote

Mumbai: After months of deliberations, the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly on Wednesday passed the ‘Prohibition of Illegal Religion Bill, 2021’, commonly known as the ‘Love Jihad’ Act, formalizing the law by a vote.

Uttar Pradesh Governor Anandiben Patel amended the law in November, exactly three months ago.

The ordinance was approved by the UP cabinet on 24 November, as the Allahabad High Court upheld the freedom of choice of individuals to its own previous order, stating that conversion to the translation of marriage was not acceptable.

Under the ‘If Love Jihad’ law, if a person is found guilty of forcible conversion for the translation of marriage, he will face a sentence of imprisonment of one to five years, and the offence will be a non-bailable offence.
