Virat Kohli’s Role Revealed In Ravi Shastri’s Head Coach Appointment For India

Mumbai: On June 20, 2017, Anil Kumble resigned from the head coach of the Indian cricketing team leaving everyone surprise as it had been a long successful one year tenure of India.

Former Indian cricketer Ravi Shastri was appointed as Kumble’s successor and a lot was talked about Kohli playing a role in his appointment as Indian head coach.

In an exclusive interview to Mirror Now’s Faye D’Souza, Shastri said that he didn’t even know about the incident between Kumble and Kohli as he was doing commentary when all the reports surrounding the incident emerged.

“I didn’t even know…I didn’t even…to be honest I was doing commentary till all this went up in the air and then there were fresh applications asked for. When the first time the applications were put out – I didn’t even apply. It’s when the second time they came and they asked for the application then I thought…there’s…seemed to be some problems there but I will apply again let’s see,” Shastri said.

“What can you ask, when I took over the job first time around we were 7,6,5 in the rankings. In a couple of years, they were 1,1,2 and 1,2,2 and they are maintaining that we can’t ask for more from a side. I mean if you look at consistency if you look at the last 4-5 years, the amount of cricket played and amount of matches that have been won I would think they are in the plus 75 per cent ratio when it comes to winning and losing – you can’t ask for anything more,” said Shastri.

“Because it’s a sport, you are bound to win some you are bound to lose some. But when you have a strike rate that is excess of 75 close to 80 it’s massive. They should be proud – the penny will drop when they finish their cricket. You know – I keep telling them,” the Indian head coach added.

Well under Ravi Shastri, India has been number one ranking in test and second in ODI and T20.

Meanwhile, under Shastri – the Kohli led team has won historic test series against Australia setting up history after 71 years.
