VVS Laxman Likely To Join Lucknow Super Giants Ahead Of IPL 2025
Mumbai: Former India middle-order batter and current National Cricket Academy (NCA) Chief, VVS Laxman, is poised to join Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) ahead of the 2025 edition of the league. According to a report in the Times of India (TOI), the Lucknow-based franchise has shown significant interest in acquiring Laxman’s services for a coaching role.
Transition from NCA to LSG
Laxman, who has been serving as the head of the NCA, is expected to end his contract in September this year. Reports indicate that he is unlikely to extend his tenure. The Sanjiv Goenka-owned franchise has reportedly approached the 49-year-old for the coaching position, and informal talks have already taken place between Laxman and the LSG management.
Previous IPL Experience
This potential move to LSG would not mark Laxman’s first foray into the IPL coaching arena. He previously served as the mentor for SunRisers Hyderabad (SRH) before taking on the role of NCA head in November 2021. Additionally, Laxman has stepped in as India’s head coach on several occasions, filling in for Rahul Dravid.
Vikram Rathour to Replace Laxman as NCA Head
In related developments, former India batting coach Vikram Rathour is slated to succeed VVS Laxman as the head of the NCA. Reports suggest that Laxman has shown little interest in renewing his contract, leading the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to consider Rathour for the role. A source quoted by SportsTak mentioned, “It is likely that you may see Rathour heading NCA. For now, a call on VVS Laxman’s contract renewal is pending, but the conversation from his side is not positive.”
BCCI’s Next Steps
The BCCI Secretary, Jay Shah, is expected to have a discussion with VVS Laxman following the ICC meeting to gain further clarity on his decision. Depending on the outcome, Rathour may be officially appointed to lead the NCA.
This potential shift in roles highlights a significant transition within Indian cricket administration, with Laxman’s move to the IPL likely to bring a wealth of experience to the Lucknow Super Giants, while Rathour’s appointment could bring fresh perspectives to the NCA.
