Warner And Pucovski Return To Aus Squad Ahead Of Third Test, Burns Dropped

Mumbai: Openers David Warner and Will Pucovski were included in the Australian squad for the third and fourth Test against India. But out-of-form opener Joe Burns was dropped from the 18-man squad. This comes after Burns poor performance in the first two test matches.

David Warner has returned to the team after regaining full fitness. He was injured during the ODI series against India and also missed the subsequent T20I series. Will Pucovski has also recovered from his ninth concert, which he faced during the first practise match against India. Warner and Pucovski will open the innings in the Sydney Test for Australia.

The Australian team management will have to look after the team combination for the Sydney Test. Matthew Wade has worked decently as an opener in the first two Tests but has never opened in first-class cricket. The hosts topped him from the order and included David Warner in the line-up only for Joe Burns.

If they are ready to debut Will Pucovski and open him, then Australia will have to leave Wade or Harvis Head. Both batsmen made their debut in four innings. It would be unfair on Wade, though unlike Head, who batted well and most importantly, looked confident at the crease. With scores of 7, 38 and 17, Head is currently the weakest member in the playing XI.

The four-match series is now well poised with India’s spectacular comeback in the Boxing Day Test. In the absence of Rohit Sharma, Ishant Sharma, Virat Kohli and Mohammed Shami, the visiting team performed brilliantly to win Australia by eight wickets at the pump in the entire Test.
