WB Facing ₹1,141 Cr Revenue Loss Due To Fuel Duties Reduction: Mamata Banerjee

The West Bengal government levies 17 per cent VAT on diesel and 25 per cent on petrol

Mumbai: West Bengal is facing a total revenue loss of ₹1,141 crore due to the reduction of duties on petrol and diesel, CM Mamata Banerjee said.

Banerjee’s statement came two days after the central government cut excise duty on petrol by Rs 8 per litre and diesel by Rs 6 per litre, bringing down the prices of both to some extent. When central duties are cut, the states also suffer the loss of earnings.

“There is an automatic state tax deduction of Rs 1.80 on petrol and Rs 1.03 on diesel (in West Bengal). We are giving a discount of Re 1 per litre on both. Thus, the total discount on petrol becomes Rs 2.80 and on diesel Rs 2.03,” she told reporters.

The West Bengal government levies 17 per cent VAT on diesel and 25 per cent on petrol.

“After spending around Rs 500 crore on account of rebate of Re 1, we are going to lose a total revenue of Rs 1,141 crore,” he said and wondered why the Center had not reduced the cess on fuel.

“The concession given by the Center to the BJP-ruled states is not given to the states ruled by the opposition parties. We are not getting our dues. The Center is depriving us of what we are going to get.”

The CM said the Narendra Modi-led central government has earned Rs 18,23,324 crore by “robbing the common man” from excise duty on petroleum products from 2014-15 to December 21, 2021.

Giving a year-on-year increase in petrol and diesel prices, Banerjee claimed that soon after the Modi government came to power, oil prices fell globally but rose in India.

In Kolkata, the price of petrol dropped by Rs 9.09 to Rs 106.03 per litre and that of diesel by Rs 7.07 to Rs 92.96 a litre on Monday.
