Mumbai: Amid rising cases of Omicron variant of COVID-19 in India and around the world, virologist Dr Gagandeep Kang said, “We will have to learn to live with SARS-CoV-2 and its variants which will continue to emerge.”

In an exclusive interview with ANI, she said that there is a lot of equipment available in the country and there is a better understanding of how to use the test against COVID-19.

“I think it is very clear that we have to learn to live with the SARS-COv-2 virus and with the diversity that will continue to emerge from a virus that replicates at a very high level,” she said.

“The important thing to remember is that we are not in the same situation today as we were two years ago. We have a lot of tools available, how to use the test, what types of treatments work, and how to use and how to make vaccines that are effective,” she said.

Dr Kang said that the severity of the Omicron variant is less than compared to the variants seen in the country.

“Fortunately, to us, Omicron appears to be somewhat less severe than other types and this may be because our population has a higher level of exposure, or has been heavily vaccinated in South Africa. Seen quite clearly So Omicron, we expect that our first experience with Delta (the variant) will not be of as much concern,” she said.

India’s new COVID-19 cases had declined to around 6,000 but the number of has been rising over the past few days.
