Why Are PM, Home Minister Quiet On ‘Agnipath’ Scheme?: Kharge

Mumbai: Congress MP Mallikarjun Kharge slammed the Modi government on Monday and asked “Why are the Prime Minister, Home Minister and Defence Minister quiet on the ‘Agnipath’ scheme?”

The announcement comes after several states in the country opposed the new military scheme aimed at recruiting youth in the age group of 17-21, who would retire after four years of service.

“For the first time in 75 years, service chiefs are being fronted to defend a policy decision by the government. Why are the Prime Minister, Home Minister and Defence Minister quiet on the Agnipath scheme? (sic),” Kharge tweeted.

Following the Agnipath scheme, which allows Indian youth to serve in the regular cadre of the armed forces for a period of four years, was announced on June 14, various states including Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Haryana, Telangana, Odisha, West Bengal, Madhya Pradesh, Punjab, Jharkhand and Assam.

As the agitation intensified in some places, the protesters torched vehicles and damaged both private and public properties. A total of 46,000 firefighters will be recruited this year, but a top military official said it will increase to 1.25 lakh in the near future. The entry age for all new recruits in the Armed Forces has been fixed at 17.5 to 21 years.

However, after protests, the central government announced to increase in the upper age limit for Agnivera’s recruitment from 21 years to 23 years for the 2022 recruitment cycle as it has not been possible to recruit during the last two years.
