Will Intensify Protest If Tikait Gets Arrested In MP: BKU State Chief

Mumbai: Bharatiya Kisan Union (BKU) State General Secretary Anil Yadav has warned of escalating their agitation if BKU national leader Rakesh Tikait was arrested on arrival in Madhya Pradesh’s Sheopur on Monday.

“Rakesh Tikait will reach Sheopur from Delhi in the afternoon. If the police arrest him under the instructions of the BJP-led state government, we will intensify our protest and the state government will be responsible for any untoward incident,” said BKU state president Anil Yadav.

While farm leaders are contacting the MP to garner support against three new agricultural laws and will hold three rallies this week, there is speculation that he may be arrested upon arrival. A police officer said on the condition of anonymity the arrest would be in connection with a 2012 case in which Tikait staged a protest against a power plant in the Jaithari area of Anuppur district.

Tikait along with 100 others were arrested under 147 (rioting), 148 (rioting with armed weapons), 149 (unlawful assembly), 307 (attempt to murder), but released on bail. Later, he appeared during a hearing and in 2016 an arrest warrant was issued against him. He has since been absconding.

However, Yadav said, “Tikait has visited the state at least eight times as the court has issued an arrest warrant against him. Why was the MP police arrested him? The government wants to suppress protests and doubts as to why ministers are trying to send farmers behind bars.”

The heavy police force has been deployed in Sheopur as thousands of people are expected in the panchayat.
