With ‘Neighbourhood First’ Policy PM Narendra Modi To Visit Maldives Today

Mumbai: After assuming office for the second term, under the ‘neighbourhood first’ policy PM Narendra Modi in his first bilateral state visit will travel to the Maldives and Sri Lanka on June 8-9.

Modi said that his visit to the Maldives reflects the importance that both the countries are associated with their marine neighbors and their relationship as a long time friend.

“We consider the Maldives as a valuable partner with which we share the deep bond of history and culture. Our bilateral relations with the Maldives have been very strong in recent times. I believe that my visit will deepen our multilateral partnership,” Narendra Modi said.

Prime Minister will also address the Maldivian Parliament, the Majlis.

PM Modi said that his visit to Sri Lanka is to express India’s unity with India and Sri Lanka, which is in view of the horrific terrorist attacks on the last Easter on April 21, 2019.

“I am confident that my visit to the Maldives and Sri Lanka will further strengthen our close and cordial ties with our maritime neighbors, in line with our ‘Neighbourhood-First Policy’ and the vision of Security and Growth for All in the Region,” read the statement.

PM Modi had earlier visited the Maldives in November last year to take part in the swearing-in ceremony of President Ibrahim Mohammad Solih after defeating Abdullah Yameen in the presidential election.
