Women Now Allowed To Join National Defence Academy, Centre Informs SC

Mumbai: The government has decided to allow the induction of women in the National Defence Academy (NDA), the Centre informed the Supreme Court. The Centre said the decision was taken after consultation with three service chiefs.

The apex court was informed that the decision was taken after consultation with the three service chiefs.

On its part, the Supreme Court today said that the armed forces are a very respectable force in the country and they too need to do more to ensure gender parity among the forces.

The court further said that it expects the defense forces to give importance to the important role of women.

The decision comes weeks after the Supreme Court last month allowed women candidates to appear in the NDA entrance exam. The court, in its order on August 18, had said that not allowing women to appear in the examination is gender discrimination.

The Centre, however, asked the court to grant status quo with respect to the exams this year since procedural and infrastructural changes would be require

The Supreme Court bench headed by Justice SK Kaul had then only issued an interim order, stating that the results of the examination would be subject to a final decision on the matter.

The court had then also expressed surprise at the fact that the Center was barring women candidates from joining the NDA despite the Supreme Court’s 2020 decision granting permanent commission to women in the Army and Navy.

“If you are introducing women in the Army then why do you create a bar in NDA,” the Bench had asked.
