World Cup 2011 Was Won By Team Effort: Gautam Gambhir

Mumbai: April 2 will always be remembered for our Indian cricketers as Team India left the 2011 ICC World Cup after 28 years. Following which former cricketer Gautam Gambhir on Thursday said that the tournament was won by a collective effort by the team and its support staff.

During the 2011 World Cup final between India and Sri Lanka, the then captain MS Dhoni, with a six, allowed the men to lift their second ODI World Cup in blue.

Cricket fans across the country cherish it as an everlasting memory. However, Gambhir was quick to tell that the tournament was won by the efforts of the entire team and dedicated support staff.

Back in 2011 World Cup finals Sri Lanka won the toss and opted to bat first.

With the help of Mahela Jayawardene century, Sri Lanka scored 274/6.

While chasing the huge score India got off to a bad start as the side lost Sachin Tendulkar and Virender Sehwag with just 31 runs on the board.

But Gambhir and MS Dhoni went one step ahead and won the match by sharing 109 runs. Gambhir returned after playing an innings of 97 runs, but in the end, Dhoni and Yuvraj defeated the team by six wickets.

India won their first World Cup in 1983 and then had to wait 28 years to win the title.
