Yashwant Sinha To Be Opposition’s Candidate For Presidential Elections

Mumbai: Opposition parties have announced former Minister of Finance Yashwant Sinha as their candidate for the Presidential elections.

The announcement came after Sinha indicated that he had accepted an offer by a section of opposition leaders to make him their presidential candidate.

While the TMC had insisted on Sinha’s name, the Congress and the Left were insisting that the former BJP leader first resigns from his party post to emerge as a more acceptable face.

“I am grateful to Mamataji for the honour and prestige she bestowed on me in the TMC. Now a time has come when for a larger national cause I must step aside from the party to work for greater opposition unity. I am sure she approves of the step,” he tweeted.

Sinha, who quit the BJP in 2018, had joined the TMC last year. He was later appointed as the Vice President of the party.

Former West Bengal Governor Gopalkrishna Gandhi, Nationalist Congress Party chief Sharad Pawar and former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Farooq Abdullah had earlier refused to run for the presidency.

The BJP will also hold its parliamentary board meeting today where it’s likely to finalise its pick for the presidential polls.

The process to elect a new president began on June 15. The last date for filing nominations is June 29. The polls, if necessary, will be held on July 18 and the counting on July.
