Yuvraj Backs Rishabh Pant Says He Needs Guidance From Captain And Head Coach

Mumbai: Backing wicket-keeper batsman Rishabh Pant, former Indian cricketer Yuvraj Singh said that the young stumper-batsman desperately needs guidance from captain Virat Kohli or anyone who can understand his psyche.

Yuvraj said that Pant was not worth criticizing and needed the support of Kohli and head coach Ravi Shastri to overcome the slip. Pant, despite being given a long rope by the Indian team, has failed to grab his chance and is playing a hasty shot.

Yuvraj quoted ‘The Sports Movement’ as saying, “I don’t know what’s happening with him (Rishabh). He is facing a lot of criticism that nobody needs. Shikhar of India On Track organization the seminar. Somebody needs to get the best out of him.”

Pant struggled during the away series against the West Indies last month before thwarting the impact in the recent domestic T20 international series against South Africa.

The former left-handed batsman said, “People are monitoring him, coach (Ravi Shastri), captain (Kohli) have to guide him.

He further said that Pant needed to be given the confidence to overcome the decline in form after a brilliant start, which led him to top-notch Test centuries in England and Australia in his first year.

Yuvraj said, “Right now the thing is in the IPL, the youth is getting a lot of money. So one needs to tell about their business and tell them what their priority is somebody really needs to talk to them said.”

Pant is seen as the successor to the iconic Mahendra Singh Dhoni, who led India to two world titles.

“If you think he is the most talented wicket-keeper batsman, then we stick with him, give him more chances. Go and ask him to play domestic cricket. You need to give him confidence, something to criticize you won’t get about that, “he said.

Shastri recently said that Pant downed the team with his fast bowlers during the series against the West Indies last month and the wicketkeeper-batsman will be given a rap every time he fails to pay the price of his wicket.

“I always felt that in the Indian team, when things did not go well, there was no one to talk to on the mental side of the players until Gary Kirsten and Paddy Upton came,” he said.

“So we need somebody to talk to these guys, ask them what are their feelings about the game, what can be done to make them play better,” Yuvraj said.
