Denied Ticket, Two-Time TMC MLA Debasree Roy Resigns From Party

Mumbai: In another setback for the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) in West Bengal, actor-turned-politician Debasree Roy left the party on Monday after being denied a ticket for the upcoming assembly election.

Noted actor and two-time Trinamool Congress MLA Debashree Roy wrote a letter to the party’s state chief Subrata Bakshi and said that he would no longer be associated with the party.

“From today I am changing all my relations with TMC. Since I am not in the position of any party, there is no need for me to resign. I was an MLA from Raydighi for the last 10 years and I want you to relieve me from all my duties. I am grateful to the party for letting me work for the people for a long time,” she wrote.

Talking about her future plans, Roy said she would focus on acting but is open to joining any other party if there is a “concrete proposal”.

More than 20 ministers and legislators have resigned from the party ahead of the assembly elections, including big names like Suvendu Adhari, state finance minister Amit Mitra, land minister Abdul Rajak Molla and agriculture minister Purnendu Basu.

The Election Commission of India (ECI) had earlier announced that the West Bengal election will be held in eight phases. The first phase will be held on March 27 and the final phase will be conducted on April 29. The poll panel will announce the West Bengal Assembly Election Results 2021 on May 2.
