PM Modi, Amit Shah Among 40 Star BJP Campaigners For Assam Polls

Mumbai: The Bharatiya Janata Party has released the list of star campaigners for the Assam Legislative Assembly elections later this month. The list includes the names of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and BJP national president JP Nadda.

Voting in three phases is scheduled in Assam from March 27. The second and third phase of voting will take place on 1 April and 6 April respectively. The results of the counting of votes are going to come on May 2.

According to the list of star campaigners for the Assam elections released by the BJP, Union ministers Amit Shah, Nitin Gadkari, Narendra Singh Tomar and Smriti Irani will campaign extensively in the northeastern state. Chief Ministers of several BJP-ruled states including Yogi Adityanath (Uttar Pradesh), Shivraj Singh Chouhan (Madhya Pradesh) and N Biren Singh (Manipur) will also be among star campaigners for the Assam Assembly polls.

Earlier, Union Minister Jitendra Singh on Tuesday expressed confidence that the BJP will return to power after securing a decisive mandate in Assam. Singh said that the margin of victory would be greater in elections and TV surveys.

In 2016, the BJP created history and ended the 15-year rule of the Congress, which formed the first government in the state. The BJP and its allies Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) and Bodoland People’s Front (BPF) won a combined 86 seats in the 126-member Assam Assembly. BJP got 60 seats, AGP 14 and BPF 12 seats. Under the leadership of Tarun Gogoi, the three-time Congress could manage to win only 26 seats.
