West Bengal Assembly Elections: Former CPI(M) Leader Sankar Ghosh Joins BJP

Mumbai: A few days after leaving the Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPI-M), the young leader Shankar Ghosh joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Siliguri on Friday ahead of the West Bengal assembly elections.

Ghosh was a former CPI (M) Secretariat member of Darjeeling district and a member of the Board of Administrators in Siliguri Municipal Corporation.

He sent his resignation on Wednesday to party secretary Jiben Sarkar, who rebelled against the CPI-M for alleged lack of democracy and was expelled from the CPI-M for alleged anti-party activities on the same day.

BJP national general secretary Kailash Vijayvargiya and Darjeeling MP Raju Bista were present at the function where Ghosh was handed the BJP flag.

The West Bengal assembly elections will be held in eight phases starting from March 27, with the last round voting taking place from March 27. Votes will be counted on 2 May.

The state is expected to have a triangular contest this time with TMC, Congress-Left alliance and BJP. A total of 7,34,07,832 voters will elect their representative for the 17th Assembly of West Bengal.
