West Bengal Extends Summer Vacations Till June 26 Due To ‘Extreme Heatwave’

Mumbai: The West Bengal government has extended the summer vacations in the state till June 26. Principal Secretary (Education) Manish Jain said in a notification that the decision was taken keeping in mind the safety of the students, news agency PTI reported.

“With regard to declaring summer vacation in schools due to extreme heat, as reports of some deaths due to heat and humidity have been received, the competent authority has decided to extend the summer vacation,” a government release said.

According to a report by news agency PTI, notices have been issued to the West Bengal Board of Secondary Education and the West Bengal Board of Primary Education.

The summer vacations were already extended from mid-April in view of the hot weather conditions.

According to PTI, the notice comes a day after three elderly pilgrims died due to heat during a religious function in Panihati.

Despite the onset of the Southwest Monsoon over the southern part of the country, there is no respite from a heat waves in the northern part.

According to the forecast of the India Meteorological Department (IMD), widespread thunderstorms are likely to occur over Northeast India and adjoining Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim during the next 5 days.

The IMD announced the arrival of the Southwest Monsoon over Mumbai on Saturday, June 11. The IMD said that as the monsoon moves towards the Bay of Bengal, sub-Himalayan West Bengal will receive heavy to very heavy rainfall.
