2 K’taka Hijab Case Petitioners Not Allowed To Take Exam Wearing Burqas

Mumbai: Two petitioners in the hijab case were on Friday not allowed to take their final Class 12 board examination at Vidyodaya PU College in Karnataka’s Udupi after they insisted on wearing burqas.

Both the girls allegedly came to the examination centre wearing hijabs, but the authorities allegedly denied them entry and did not allow them to appear in their second PUC examination.

Alia Asadi and Resham had obtained their hall tickets and had reached Vidyadaya PU College in Udupi wearing hijabs to take the exam.

They reportedly solicited the invigilators and the college principal for 45 minutes but were ultimately denied an exemption from the Karnataka government’s decision of the court upholding the ban. Later, they were seen quietly leaving the campus without taking the exam.

Meanwhile, the Karnataka High Court ruled in favour of the state, allowing the government to formulate and operate a uniform policy. In response, the state banned the hijab from educational institutions as well as the upcoming SSLC and PUC exams.

The ban was imposed during the Karnataka SSLC test. A uniform clothing rule was applied for the PUC exam.

Karnataka’s second PUC or class 12 exams began on Friday. Around 7 lakh candidates have enrolled to take the exam.
