Shah today chaired the 29th meeting of the Southern Zonal Council of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Kerala, Telangana and Union Territories in Puducherry, Lakshadweep and Tirupati in Andhra Pradesh.

The regional councils take up issues relating to the centre and the states and one or several states falling within the region. Thus, regional councils provide a forum for resolving disputes and problems between the Center and the states and between several states in the region.

The regional councils discuss a range of issues including border disputes, matters relating to infrastructure like security, roads, transport, industry, water and power etc., forests and environment, housing, education, food security, tourism. , and transportation etc.

Five Zonal Councils were set up in the year 1957 under Section 15-22 of the States Re-organization Act, 1956. Union Home Minister is the Chairman of each of these five Zonal Councils and Chief Ministers of the host State (to be chosen by rotation every year) is the Vice-Chairman. Two more Ministers from each State are nominated as Members by the Governor.
