6,000 Indians Brought Back To India From Ukraine Till Tuesday: V Muraleedharan

Mumbai: Around 20,000 Indians were stuck in Ukraine and over 6,000 of them have been brought back till Tuesday, MoS MEA, V Muraleedharan, said on Wednesday.

Talking to reporters here, Muraleedharan said, “Around 20,000 Indians were stranded in Ukraine. Out of these, 4000 people returned by February 24. Till yesterday, over 2000 more people have returned. We are trying to bring back the remaining Indians via Romania, Poland Hungary, Slovakia and Moldova.”

External Affairs Minister V Muraleedharan interacted with the parents of students stranded in several parts of Ukraine and briefed them about the government’s rescue operations under Operation Ganga.

Since this morning, three Air Force planes have been sent to Romania and Hungary to rescue Indians trapped in Ukraine. Another one is scheduled for Poland today. “The evacuation operation will go on round the clock. Relief material is also being sent. The operation is going on in coordination with the Ministry of External Affairs,” Deputy Air Chief Air Marshal Sandeep Singh said today.

The IAF has deployed C-17 aircraft as part of the evacuation efforts in coordination with the Ministry of External Affairs under ‘Operation Ganga’.

This comes after Prime Minister Narendra Modi chaired a high-level meeting on Tuesday to review efforts to bring back Indians stranded in Ukraine and asked the Indian Air Force to join the evacuation efforts under ‘Operation Ganga’.’
