65% Teenagers Received 1st COVID-19 Vaccine Dose In 1 Month: Health Minister

Mumbai: A total of 65% of eligible beneficiaries in the 15-18 age group have received their first COVID-19 vaccine dose as India began vaccinating its teenagers a month ago, Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya said on Friday.

“Young India’s historic effort continues. In just one month, 65 per cent of those aged between 15-18 have been administered their first dose. Under the leadership of Prime Minister @NarendraModi, the world’s largest inoculation drive is creating new records,” Mandaviya’s tweet, translated roughly from Hindi, read.

Since January 3, when the nationwide vaccination campaign for the 15-18 age group began, the number of adolescents vaccinated with the first dose is around 50 million, while those fully vaccinated (both doses) are close to 3.5 million, shows the data published by the Union Health Ministry.

The nationwide campaign began on January 16 last year, with health care workers and frontline workers at the fore. The practice was gradually expanded to include all people aged 18 and over.

The vaccination for the 15-18 age group was announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in an address to the nation on 25 December last year.
