‘You Can’t Block Roads…Hold Protest In The Area Identified For It’ – SC To Shaheen Bagh Protestors

Mumbai: The Supreme Court on Monday issued a notice to the Delhi Government and Delhi Police regarding the ongoing protests against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act in the Shaheen Bagh area.

Refusing to give any instructions on the protests in Shaheen Bagh without hearing the other party, the SC listed the case for further hearing on 17 February.

Hearing public interest litigation seeking the removal of anti-CAA protesters from Shaheen Bagh, Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul said the movement has been going on for a long time and asked how one can block public roads and others May cause discomfort.

A bench of two judges, including Justice KM Joseph, said, “There is a law and there are complaints against it. The matter is pending in court. Despite this, some people are protesting. They are entitled to protest.”

The bench said, “You cannot block public roads. There cannot be an indefinite period of protest in such an area. If you want to protest, it has to be in the area identified for protest.”
