COVID19: No Winter Session of Parliament This Year, Budget Session Likely In January

Mumbai: In view of the outbreak of Coronavirus, the government has decided to cancel the winter session of Parliament this time. Quoting floor leaders of various parties, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pralhad Joshi said in a letter to the Congress’s impatient Ranjan Chowdhury that the government wants to call the next session of Parliament “as soon as possible”, and that it would be appropriate that the Budget is in January.

“The government is ready to hold the next session of Parliament as soon as possible; this budget session would be appropriate keeping in view the unprecedented circumstances created by the COVID-19 pandemic January 2021,” he said, Choudhary’s reply to 3 December Letter.

Chaudhary called for a short winter session to discuss issues such as the farmers’ movement, the preparation of the Kovid-19 vaccine, the economic downturn, and the deadlock on the India-China border.

As soon as the news of the government’s decision came out, Congress leaders pulled up the government on social media, linking the decision to the repeal of the three agricultural laws. He recalled that the monsoon session of Parliament was held in September when the number of COVID19 cases was at its peak.

The monsoon session, which began on 14 September, when the average number of new daily cases in Delhi averaged 4,001, was cut by eight days after a positive test by at least 50 people connected to Parliament. The plan to skip the winter session was drafted when the daily average was 6,670.
