India Must Be Ready To Face Upheaval Fue To AI: Rajnath Singh

Mumbai: Defence Minister Rajnath Singh said that India needs to work on artificial intelligence (AI) mechanism “extremely carefully” and it must be ready to face a legal, ethical, political and economic upheaval that may follow due to this technology.

“We have to use artificial intelligence (AI) for the progress and peace of humanity. It should not happen that one country or group of countries establish their dominance over this technology – just like nuclear power – and the rest of the countries are not able to take advantage of this technology,” he said.

Singh was speaking after inaugurating a program titled ‘AIDF (Artificial Intelligence in Defence)’ here. He said the ethics and dangers of AI should be properly considered.

“We can’t stop the progress of artificial intelligence and we shouldn’t try to stop its progress. But we need to be careful with it.”

He said that when a new technology brings about a huge change, its transition period is equally big and serious.

“Since AI is a technology that can bring about massive change, we must be prepared to face legal, ethical, political and economic upheavals,” Singh said.

We need to work on AI very carefully so that it (technology) does not get out of our control in the coming times.

The Defense Minister further said that the coming of technology is like the speed of the clock because once you move forward, it is not possible to go back.

“Whenever a new technology comes along, society takes its time to adjust itself,” he said.

He also said that the country should ensure democratic use of technology.

The defence sector is undergoing important changes due to AI. The training of soldiers is also being improved with the help of AI, he mentioned. Singh launched 75 defence products powered by artificial intelligence at the event. Out of these 75 products, some are already being used by the armed forces while the rest are in the process of deployment.

These 75 products are in the domains of robotics systems, cyber security, human behaviour analysis, intelligent monitoring system, supply chain management, voice analysis and C4ISR (command, control, communication, computer and intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance) and operational data analytics.
