Bengaluru Bans Protests Near Colleges, Schools Till March 22 Amid Hijab Row

Mumbai: Amid the ongoing hijab controversy, Bengaluru Police Commissioner Kamal Pant has extended the ban on protests and gatherings within the 200-metre radius of schools, colleges, and other educational institutions till March 22.

According to the order issued on Monday, March 7, any gathering or protest is prohibited within 200 meters of schools, PU colleges, degree colleges or other similar educational institutions in Bengaluru.

Muslim women in several parts of Karnataka have protested the decision of the college authorities to bar them from appearing in the examination to attend class wearing the hijab.

The Commissioner of Police said that since the hijab issue has not been resolved, any possibility of protest on the issue cannot be ruled out, and hence the order has been issued.

He said that proper security measures are necessary to maintain peace and order in the city.

The Karnataka High Court on February 25 reserved its verdict on petitions by Muslim girls seeking protection of their right to wear hijab in classrooms. This comes 11 days after the hearing of the case.

On 10 February, the Karnataka High Court had agreed to continue hearing the pleas filed by the girls but had refused to pass an interim order that would have allowed them to continue wearing hijabs until it arrived at a final decision.
