Death Toll Due To Assam Floods, Landslides Rises To 27: ASDMA

Mumbai: Amid heavy rains in Assam, the death toll due to floods and landslides has risen to 27, the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) said.

Of the total deaths, 21 were due to floods and the rest were due to landslides in different districts.

However, an official of the State Disaster Management Authority said the flood situation has improved due to less rainfall.

Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) Chief Executive Officer Gyanendra Dev Tripathi gave this information on Wednesday.

“The flood situation has improved due to less rainfall in Assam. Around 5.8 lakh people are affected and 80,000 people are still living in relief camps.”

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Tuesday predicted more rain in the northeastern states including Assam in the next few days.

At least 5,80,145 people, including 1,15,208 children from 1,374 villages in 18 of the state’s 34 districts, have been affected, officials said. Of the 18 districts, Nagaon, Cachar and Morigaon are the worst affected by the floods.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Tuesday 24 May visited the flood-affected areas to take stock of the situation.

The CM met people affected by floods and landslides in Haflong, Dima Hasao and Sarkar Bagan areas and assured them of financial relief. Sarma also directed the officials to ensure speedy restoration of road connectivity in the area.

He also held a meeting on Tuesday with government officials and Dima Hasao District Administration to review the preliminary destruction caused due to landslide. He stressed the restoration of damaged roads in the flood and immediately resuming full-scale transportation.
