Mumbai: Amid the increasing air crisis in Delhi, the Delhi government has decided to extend the ‘Red Light On, Gaadi Off’ campaign to curb vehicle pollution until December 3.

The first phase of the campaign was supposed to end on November 18. However, Delhi Environment Minister Gopal Rai on Tuesday informed that it will be extended by 15 days- The second phase from November 19 to December 3.

The emergency meeting held by the centre and states surrounding Delhi-NCR decided to stop construction work and shut industries contributing to the crisis.

“In today’s meeting with officials of Punjab, Haryana, UP, Haryana, we (Delhi govt) proposed that WFH should be implemented in NCR regions; construction work should be banned, industries should be shut too (in NCR),” said Gopal Rai.

He added, “In its affidavit, the Centre mentioned both 4% and 35-40% stubble burning contribution in air pollution. It should be clarified…How can both be correct? I urge the Environment minister to verify (the data).”

The Supreme court had asked the Chief Secretaries of Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, Haryana to be present for an emergency meeting by the Centre held today to discuss different ways in order to deal with the pollution.

During the hearing, the Centre submitted that stubble burning only contributes to 10% of the pollution, calming that it was not the major cause of pollution at present in Delhi and northern states.

On Saturday, the apex court had termed the rise in pollution levels an “emergency situation” and suggested clamping a lockdown in the national capital.

The authorities on Monday said that no improvement in the air quality in Delhi-NCR is expected for another three days.
