Former Maharashtra Home Minister Anil Deshmukh’s Lawyer Arrested

Mumbai: CBI on Thursday arrested former Maharashtra Home Minister Anil Deshmukh’s lawyer. “Two people including the CBI sub-inspector have been arrested in the case so far,” CBI added.

Lawyer Anand Daga has been arrested by the central probe agency for allegedly attempting to subvert the investigation against the former minister, said officials.

Daga, arrested from Mumbai, has been brought to Delhi on transit remand, reports said.

The CBI had earlier arrested one of its sub-inspector in this case. A total of two people have been arrested in the case so far and both will be produced in a competent court, the agency said.

The CBI had yesterday said that it had arrested its sub-inspector for allegedly illegally taking bribe from the NCP leader’s team to influence the case. The CBI is conducting a preliminary inquiry into the corruption claims against the former minister on the directions of the Bombay High Court.

“The CBI has registered a case against its sub-inspector, a Nagpur-based advocate and unknown others on certain allegations, including illegal gratification. During the investigation of the case, CBI has today arrested the sub-inspector. The said advocate is being questioned. Searches were conducted in Allahabad and Delhi,” CBI spokesperson RC Joshi was quoted as saying yesterday.

The developments came days after the leaking of a report of the preliminary enquiry which purportedly gave a clean chit to Deshmukh. The report surfaced last Saturday night.

The CBI probe so far into the leakage of the report has revealed that Deshmukh’s team allegedly tried to subvert the investigation against the former minister by paying illegal gratification to Tiwari.
