Marathwada Residents Once Fought Injustice Of Nizam, Now Handling Pandemic Well: Maha CM

Most of the Marathwada region in central Maharashtra was under Nizam rule before 1948

Mumbai: Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray said here on Friday that the residents of the Marathwada region have fought against the “injustice” of the Nizam’s rule in the past and are now dealing effectively with the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

Speaking on the occasion of Marathwada Mukti Sangram Diwas (Marathwada Liberation Day), he said that the real development of the area would start now, and announced a government medical college in Parbhani district and a turmeric processing unit in Hingoli district.

Thackeray visited the Marathwada Liberation War Memorial at Siddharth Garden here and paid floral tributes to the martyrs of the liberation movement.

Most of the Marathwada region in central Maharashtra was under Nizam rule before 1948.

Thackeray said, “The residents of Marathwada have faced the Nizam’s injustice, but kept fighting against him. Despite the arrogance of Nizam, people here refused to become a part of the Nizam state and joined India as their country.”

“Last year, I could not come here because of the pandemic. The residents here have previously struggled with the Nizam’s rule, they are fighting the pandemic well now,” he said.

The chief minister announced various projects for the region.

He said, “Marathwada is the land of saints and hence we are going to start a Sant Peeth, an institute which will teach the teachings of saints here at Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar Marathwada University. In future, it should become a separate university.”

“The Nizam period structures are not a matter of pride. We are planning to redevelop the buildings of 150 Nizam-era schools in the region. The government has also planned a medical college in Parbhani. Along with this, funds will be allocated for building roads and an underground drainage line scheme in Aurangabad city, and for the water supply scheme in Parbhani. The Jalna-Nanded expressway will add to the development of Marathwada,” he said.
